Just The FAQ’s

How long do commissions take to build?

While it varies from project to project, design sketch to completion will take approximately 90 days.

What steps are involved in the design process?

First, I consult with you on design and preferences. I use your input to conceptualize a computer based model and create the templates used to shape the boat.

I then use ripping jigs and feather boards on my table saw to ensure accurate and consistent wood strips that I use to assemble the boats. I shape each strip to closely fit against the adjacent strips before gluing them together with water resistant wood glue and sand the hull.

From there, I insulate the outside and inside of the craft with fiberglass and smooth out any kinks with a fine sander.

The last step is to apply varnish for a sleek look and to protect the wood from the UV rays of the sun.

How should I care for my piece to ensure longevity?

As long as you keep your craft stored in a dry place away from the elements when not in use, it will last for years. From time to time, you may want to lightly sand and revarnish your piece.

What kind of wood do you use?

I use a combination of Western red cedar, Alaska yellow cedar, purple heart, mahogany, and walnut. I look for the finest wood to build my boats. I have been obtaining quality sustainably harvested lumber from Jackel Enterprises in Watsonville, CA as well as offcuts from cabinet shops in the Ventura area.

What is your return policy/warranty?

Due to the careful planning and work that goes into each piece, I do not accept returns. However, all pieces are warrantied against any structural defects.
