The Building Process
Constructing the Frame
After consulting with you on design and personal preferences, I use your input to conceptualize a computer based model and create the paper templates used to shape the craft. These templates are then translated to cuts of plywood that I use to construct the initial frame for the craft to be built upon.
Cutting out the Design
Next, I look for the finest wood to build my boats. I have been obtaining quality and sustainably harvested lumber from Jackel Enterprises in Watsonville, CA as well as offcuts from cabinet shops in the Ventura area. I look for aged clear tight-grain boards from 10’ to 20’. Once I’ve acquired the wood, I use ripping jigs and feather boards on my table saw to ensure accurate and consistent wood strips that I use to assemble the boats.
Piecing it Together / Polishing with Precision
I shape each wood strip to closely fit and align against the adjacent strips before gluing them together with premium water resistant wood glue and sand the hull. I then insulate the outside and inside of the boat with corrosion and impact resistant fiberglass. As I continue to do throughout the process, I smooth out all of the bumps and kinks with a fine sander.
Glazing on the Varnish
Once the craft is fully assembled, it’s time to add the finishing touch: a waterproof varnish for a sleek look and added layer of protection from the elements. This protects the wood from the sun’s harsh UV rays and gives your craft that special glisten out on the water.
Testing it out on the Water
The last step is to take it for a test run so that your order runs smoothly upon arrival. First, I check to make sure there are no leaks. Second, I make sure the piece moves with ease and functions with grace. Lastly, I introduce the wood to the water for that initial weathering so that on your first voyage, your vessel is perfectly tuned and ready to ride the waves.
